WATERLOO, Ont. (Guelph Gryphons) – The Guelph Gryphons men’s basketball team was eliminated from the OUA playoff race after a 75-61 loss to the Laurier Golden Hawks on Sunday afternoon.
With the loss, the Gryphons fall to 5-17 on the season while Laurier improves to 10-12. The game was played at the Manulife Sportsplex at RIM Park with Laurier’s regular home court currently undergoing repairs following water damage sustained earlier this year.
A slow start on Sunday afternoon would prove to be too much for the Gryphons to overcome, as Laurier started the game by forcing four straight turnovers and built a commanding 20-7 after the opening quarter of play. The Gryphons committed 19 turnovers on the day and were trailing by 17 at the half and 22 after three quarters.
Tommy Yanchus led the Gryphons with 16 points and eight rebounds, while fifth year guard Daniel Dooley chipped in with 13 points and five rebounds. The Gryphons will close out the 2017-18 season with a pair of home games as they host the Waterloo Warriors on Wednesday before the Western Mustangs are the visitors when the Gryphons honour their seniors on Saturday.
