Golden Bears and Pandas off to a strong start on day one of wrestling conference

EDMONTON (from Alberta Golden Bears) – The host University of Alberta Golden Bears and Saskatchewan Huskie women took charge on day one of the 2018 Canada West Championship, with each program going undefeated in their dual matches, Friday at the University of Alberta’s Main Gym.

The Golden Bears opened the championship with wins over the Calgary Dinos (37-10) and the Saskatchewan Huskies (32-19), beginning their title defence with a 2-0 record. On the women’s side, the Saskatchewan Huskies also started their quest for a second-straight conference title with a strong performance on Friday, opening with wins against Calgary (22-18), Regina (22-16), and Fraser Valley (25-8) to jump atop the women’s standings with a 3-0 record.

Leading the Huskies was a pair of wrestlers who began their championships undefeated, as both Alex Schell (48 kg) and Taylor Follensbee (82 kg) were a perfect 3-0 on Friday. For the Golden Bears, six wrestlers earned 2-0 records, including Jordan Wong (54 kg), Melvin Arciaga (57 kg), Devan Larkin (65 kg), Aidan McKeage (76 kg), Nicholas Goleniec (82 jg), and Clayton Brinker (90 kg).

The Alberta Pandas also went undefeated on Friday, defeating UFV and Regina to slot in second in the women’s standings behind Saskatchewan with a 2-0 record. On the men’s side, both Saskatchewan and Regina went 1-1 in their two matches, and begin Saturday just one win behind Alberta for the top spot in the men’s standings.

The Golden Bears begin Saturday’s competition against Fraser Valley (0-1), before finishing the competition against the 1-1 Regina Cougars. The Huskies have just one match remaining on Saturday, as they battle the host Pandas.

Day two of the 2018 Canada West Wrestling Championship begins Sunday at 9:30 am MST in Edmonton, with the final matches scheduled for 2:30 pm MST.
