WINNIPEG (from Racquetball Canada) – Canada’s best racquetball athletes will be at the Kitchener YMCA from Feb. 2-4 for Racquetball Canada’s National Team Selection Event.
Thirty-two high-performance athletes will compete in Men’s and Women’s Open Singles events. The organizers are also having a tournament open to all participants that will run concurrently with the Selection Event that includes several singles and doubles skill categories. More than 50 players of all ages and abilities will be competing at the tournament.
This is the final competition prior to the 2018 Pan Am Championship Team being selected. The event also impacts the 2018 World Championship Team and is also part of the consideration for nomination to national teams and Sport Canada funding. The Pan Am Championships take place March 23-31 in Temuco, Chile.
“I’m so excited to see who will be named to our Pan American Championship team.” said Geri Powell, Racquetball Canada’s administrator of high performance and sport development. “I’m very proud of each of the athletes that continue to train hard to wear the Maple Leaf internationally.”
The Women’s Open Singles event will include Frédérique Lambert of Montreal, the top-ranked player in the nation, as well as Winnipeg’s Jen Saunders and Christine Richardson, who are ranked second and third respectively.
Mike Green of Hamilton, Coby Iwaasa of Lethbridge, Alta., and Samuel Murray of Baie-Comeau, Que. — ranked first, second and third respectively, are in the Men’s Open Singles category.
