ST. JOHN’S, N.L. (from UNB Varsity Reds) – For the second time in three matches, the UNB Varsity Reds forced a fifth and deciding set. But, once again, the Memorial Sea-Hawks prevailed.

The Sea-Hawks beat the Varsity Reds 3-2 on Sunday afternoon… 25-17, 25-21, 18-25, 16-25 and 15-9.

With the win, Memorial completed a sweep of the three match weekend series, improving to 8-6. The Varsity Reds are now 0-14.

The Sea-Hawks came out strong, taking an early lead of 13-7. They took advantage of weak Varsity Reds defensive play, building a healthy lead and taking the set 25-17.

In the second set, the V-Reds showed life, pulling even with Memorial at 15-15. But, the Sea-Hawks capitalized on Varsity Reds’ errors and finished with a 25-21 win.

Cue the Varsity Reds comeback… of sorts.

The Varsity Reds looked strong in the third, building an early 6-3 lead, one they would not relinquish on their way to a 25-18 win.

The V-Reds strong offensive play continued in the fourth set, as UNB raced out to a 7-1 lead. They were able to hold the momentum, punishing the Sea-Hawks defensive frailty and extending the lead to 14-5. UNB won the fourth set 25-16.

In the end, the Sea-Hawks rallied, establishing an early 8-3 lead in the fifth. They’d use their offensive momentum to close out the game with a 15-9 set victory.

Kier Fey (Selkirk, Man.) had 12 kills for the Sea-Hawks, while Emma Hackett (Clarenville, N.L.) had 10. Alison Poynter (St. John’s, N.L.) had 36 assists for the hosts.

Kieren Hume (Truro, N.S.) had 18 kills for the Varsity Reds, while Megan Kuciak (Ottawa, Ont.) contributed 13.

The Sea-Hawks are off until February 2 when they visit Dalhousie. The Varsity Reds host Dal next Saturday and Sunday.
