FREDERICTON, N.B. – University of New Brunswick athletics has announced Joe Hamilton of the men’s soccer team and Abby Sullivan of the women’s soccer team as Varsity Reds Athletes of the Week.
Joe Hamilton, Fullback
Hamilton a first-year student-athlete, originally from the United Kingdom, proved to be a force in a pair of weekend games for the Varsity Reds. The Reds drew against Cape Breton on Saturday and lost 1-0 on Sunday in a close battle with St FX. Varsity Reds head coach Miles Pinsent had high praise for his center-back, “Joe has been able to step into a major role right away, he’s played every minute of our first four games. He has very good defending instincts, but is also tremendous at playing out of our end.”
Abby Sullivan, Striker
On the woman’s side, third-year striker Abby Sullivan played a vital role in a pair of weekend games in which, UNB collected its first point of the season in Sunday’s 1-1 draw with St Francis Xavier. Sullivan set up UNB’s lone goal against St. FX and was on the attack in both of the games. Jon Crossland, head coach of the Varsity Reds women’s soccer team, described the striker, “She is fearless and works tirelessly on both sides of the ball, we gave her some specific performance markers for the weekend and felt she impacted the games positively in both contests.”
Both Hamilton and Sullivan are back in action against UPEI on Sunday, September 24th at UNB’s BMO Centre. The ladies kick off at 1:00 pm ADT, followed by the men at 3:15 pm ADT.
